Karen... Thinking out loud

I would like to share some news… University of Maine Cooperative Extension of Somerset County in partnership with Somerset Grange and Somerset Public Health is now hosting a senior gathering twice a month. This is a place to meet with senior friends to have coffee and snacks. Seniors can enjoy games and face to face conversations. They will host these gatherings every second and fourth Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:30. They do ask that you sign up in advance of attending. The number to reserve your spot or to get more information is 474-9622. The address is 7 County Drive, Skowhegan in the Cooperative Extension meeting room. The next meeting date is February 8. Valentine’s crafts will be available and our friendly bear will be in attendance. All seniors are welcome, so bring a friend and come and enjoy yourselves.

As we meet with members of the community and assess the needs of these people we make decisions as to rather a specific support group would be helpful. We continue to offer our drop in support groups every Tuesday at 4:00pm and are willing to have specific support groups whenever there is a need. We currently have made the decision to form a men’s support group. This group will begin meeting the end of February. Sharing experiences and support with a group of people that share a similar grief can be extremely helpful and comforting. More information on the day and time of this group will be announced. In the meantime if you would like to sign up or would like more information please call the office at 474-7775 or email us here. We are here to help.

Director's View

2017 is underway, for us this is going to be a big year for us and we will be doing work and determining the best course of action of the organization moving forward. We would like to hear your feedback as to what you would like to see our organization doing the in years to come. Since my time of coming to the organization two of my main mission has been to be the best volunteer organization that we can be, by meeting as many needs as we can, and the second being that we are able to break even at year end. For this reason we have taken a step back and we have restructured this year, by Jason becoming a part time director and Karen doing volunteer services and bereavement. We would like to take a minute and touch on a couple of things.

Hospice Educational Resources: We recognize that our education programs cannot cover all of the concerns or answer all of the questions that you may have. In an attempt to be as thorough as possible, we have compiled the resources both online and at the office for your information and review. As always, if you have any questions, please call us at (207) 474.7775.

Hospice Advance Directives: Everyone, regardless of their age or health status, should discuss their wishes with family members and then record those wishes in writing with an advance directive. Hospice Volunteers of Somerset County and our Medical Partners can help by providing valuable information about advance directive planning.

To find information and sample advance directive forms click on the link for Maine here, and all other states here.  If you have any questions, please call us at (207) 474.7775.
